Water Pump Accessories: What Runs the Pump, What Protects It and What Is Optional
Water pump accessories are the parts around a pump that carry its power, guard its motor, decide when it switches on and keep water moving in one direction. A pump bought alone may run unprotected, overflow the tank or hammer its own pipe. This page sorts ToolHaat accessories by the job each does, so you know what your setup needs. For the pumps themselves, start at Water Pumps and Motors.
Every accessory does one of three jobs, and the job tells you how urgent it is.
| Job | Typical parts | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Makes the pump run | Control panel or starter, submersible cable | Required. Without a matching one the pump cannot start safely |
| Protects the pump | Overload relay, non-return valve, dry run protection, pressure switch | Strongly advised. Skipping them shows up later as a burnt winding or a split pipe |
| Saves effort | Tank alarm, level controller, pressure gauge, strainer | Optional, though worth having where the tank is out of sight |
What the Pump Accessories Range Contains
The category lists about 233 models, from roughly ₹256 to ₹36,300. Brands include ENJOY, Crompton, Imagine Technologies, SensaSwitch, SSMAQUAMAX, KSB and Vahra Technology, plus unbranded items. The families below come straight from the product names.
| Family | What the listings show |
|---|---|
| Panels and starters | Single phase capacitor panels, relay panels, three phase DOL starters with an amp range |
| Submersible flat cable | 3 core cable in 1.5, 2.5, 4 and 6 sq mm, with length and HP in the name |
| Non-return valves | Vertical NRVs in stainless steel and brass, from 1/2 inch to 2 inch |
| Level control | Controllers, tank overflow alarms, sensors, a level control valve that needs no electricity |
| Pressure parts | Pressure tanks from 2 to 60 litres, a pressure switch, pump controllers, gauges |
| Extras | Y strainer, brass connector, float switches, motor guard, floater frames for open well pumps |
Submersible Pump Control Panel and Starter: Matching the Motor
A panel or starter must match the motor's phase, HP and current, and every other choice follows from that. On single phase submersibles the panel also carries the running capacitor, and the product name states its value. CROMPOWER metal body panels list 36, 50 and 72 MFD for 1 HP, 1.5 HP and 2 HP oil filled pumps, while ENJOY V4 relay panels for 3 HP and 5 HP list 50+50 and 72+72 µF. The capacitor belongs to the motor design, so match the panel to the pump nameplate and not to HP alone.
For three phase pumps, a DOL starter is named by its amp range. ENJOY lists 6 to 10 A for 0.25 to 0.75 HP, 9 to 14 A for 1 HP, 13 to 21 A for 1.5 to 2 HP and 20 to 32 A for 3 HP and above. Read the full load current on the motor nameplate, pick the range that contains it, and set the overload relay to that nameplate figure. The ENJOY 5 HP three phase relay control panel shows the pattern: HP, relay range and pump type in one line. A bigger set might use the Crompton 13-22 A DOL starter, listed for a 10 HP motor and a 7.5 HP submersible.
Isolate the supply before opening any panel, earth the body, and have a qualified electrician do the wiring. Not sure which amp range fits? Send the nameplate current through the Request for Quote form.
Submersible Cable: Thickness and Length
Submersible cable must be thick enough for the whole run, because a long thin cable loses voltage before it reaches the motor. A motor that receives less than its rated voltage draws more current and runs hot, a real risk where farm supply already swings. As a rule of thumb, a longer run or a bigger motor needs a thicker conductor, and between two sizes you take the thicker.
The listing names show the pairing the makers suggest:
- CROMPOWER 1.5 sq mm, 30 m, for pumps up to 1 HP, and a 30 m listing for 1.5 HP and 2 HP
- KBS 2.5 sq mm in 30, 50 and 70 m for 2 HP and 3 HP pumps
- KSB 4 sq mm in 50, 70 and 100 m for 5 HP and 7.5 HP pumps
- KSB 6 sq mm in 50, 70 and 100 m for pumps above 10 HP
Measure the full length, which is the depth where the pump hangs plus the run from the borewell to the panel. Then check the maker's cable chart, since size depends on current as well as length. The Havells and KEI wires in the category are listed for house wiring, so keep them on the building side and use flat submersible cable for the part that goes into the water.
Non-Return Valve: Size, Material and Position
A non-return valve (NRV) stops water running back down the delivery pipe when the pump stops. Without one on a deep or long line, the pipe drains and the returning water can spin the pump backwards or shock the pipe.
Fit the first valve close to the pump and below the water level, preferably a spring-loaded type, since swing valves close slowly. Very deep lines often add more valves, so follow the pump maker's manual. ToolHaat lists vertical NRVs from 1/2 inch (15 mm) to 2 inch (50 mm), in brass and in SS-304 and SS-316 stainless steel.
- Match the valve size to the delivery pipe
- Follow the flow arrow on the body
- SS-316 is generally the more corrosion resistant grade, so confirm the grade for salty or treated water
Water Level Controllers, Alarms and Float Switches
An alarm only warns you, while a controller switches the pump for you. Use these decision rules.
- If you only need a warning, choose a tank overflow alarm. SensaSwitch and SSMAQUAMAX list battery operated versions
- If you want the pump to stop when the tank fills but start by hand, choose a semi automatic controller such as the Vahra semi automatic water level controller
- If you want start and stop both automatic, choose a fully automatic controller
- If the water sits in an underground tank, look for controllers named reverse or for underground tanks
- If there is no power at the tank, the MSR level control valve works without electricity
Check what current a controller can switch. Names such as 0 to 1.5 HP pumps or 30 A relay set a limit, and larger pumps should be switched through a contactor or starter. Some controllers mention dry run protection, so read the product page to see what they sense.
For sumps and drains, a float switch does the same job. The heavy duty 2 m float switch for sewage pump is one example, and the matching pumps sit under dewatering and sewage pumps.
Pressure Tanks, Pressure Switches and Gauges
Add a pressure tank only when your line is pressurised, because its job is to hold a reserve so the pump does not start at every tap. A pump controller is the tank-free alternative; check its pressure rating on the listing. ToolHaat lists tanks of 2, 8, 24, 35 and 60 litres, some rated to 10 bar, along with a Danfoss KP35 pressure switch, Crompton and BTALI pump controllers and analog gauges.
A gauge helps you tell a weak pump from a blocked pipe. For poor pressure in bathrooms, see booster pumps first.
Shopping Lists by Setup
The table puts the pieces together by setup.
| Setup | Required | Strongly advised | Optional |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home borewell, single phase | Panel with the right capacitor, flat cable sized to depth | NRV, earthing | Level controller or tank alarm |
| Farm borewell, three phase | DOL starter in the right amp range, flat cable | NRV, overload set to nameplate current | Level controller wired through a contactor |
| Open well | Openwell panel with MCB | NRV, floater frame if the listing suits your pump | Overflow alarm |
| Drain or sewage sump | Float switch | NRV on the discharge | Panel with level control |
| Pressurised line | Pump controller or pressure switch | Pressure tank, gauge | Y strainer on the suction side |
For a borewell pump, see submersible pumps, and for dug wells and ponds, open well pumps.
Before the First Start: A Short Checklist
Most accessory failures are matching errors, so run these checks first.
- Compare the relay or overload setting with the full load current on the nameplate
- Confirm the NRV arrow points along the flow, away from the pump
- Check the cable reaches the panel with slack and the body is earthed
- Place level sensors at the heights you want for start and stop
- Before summer, when the water table falls, test any dry run protection
